Forum 3 - From Boon Keng MRT Station to Tan Kah Kee MRT Station: Bridging History and Advancing Education

Our distinguished guest speakers, along with the Chairman, Vice Chairman, and Committee Members of the Tan Kah Kee Foundation.

On December 8, 2024, the Tan Kah Kee Foundation held its final forum and event of the year, in collaboration with Lianhe Zaobao, at SPH Media’s Auditorium to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of the late Tan Kah Kee.

The forum, titled “From Boon Keng MRT Station to Tan Kah Kee MRT Station: Bridging History and Advancing Education,” spotlighted two extraordinary historical figures—Mr. Tan Kah Kee and his like-minded friend and education visionary, Dr. Lim Boon Keng.

The event featured distinguished speakers, including Dr. Lee Guan Kin, founding head of the Division of Chinese and former director of the Centre for Chinese Language and Culture at Nanyang Technological University, and Mr. Peter Ong, Associate Editor of Lianhe Zaobao, who chaired the engaging Q&A session.

Mr. Lawrence Tan, Chairman of the Tan Kah Kee Foundation, delivered the opening address. In his speech, he shared “The two pioneers were among the most influential figures in the Chinese communities of Southeast Asia in the 20th century. United by their shared educational ideals, they worked hand in hand to lay a solid foundation for the advancement of education in both Singapore and China. Their friendship and collaboration not only significantly propelled the development of education within the Chinese community but also left behind a precious spiritual legacy, profoundly influencing societal progress and development. To honor their remarkable contributions, Singapore has specially named two MRT stations as Boon Keng MRT Station and Tan Kah Kee MRT Station, forever engraving their outstanding achievements and historical significance.”

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone for their unwavering support to the Tan Kah Kee Foundation and participation in this forum! Special thanks to our co-organizer and designated media partner, Lianhe Zaobao, for providing the venue and their invaluable support in making this event a success.

This forum marked the final event in this year’s series commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Mr. Tan Kah Kee. The Tan Kah Kee Foundation will continue organizing enriching activities and forums to carry forward and to promote the spirit of Mr. Tan Kah Kee.

Stay tuned for future forums and seminars. We look forward to seeing you at the next one!
