Tan Kah Kee Foundation and Ee Hoe Hean, alongside our Guest of Honour, Mr. George Yeo
On October 5, 2024, the Tan Kah Kee Foundation and Ee Hoe Hean Club jointly organized the “Tan Kah Kee 150th Anniversary Commemorative Exhibition” and the “16th Anniversary Celebration of the Tan Kah Kee Foundation’s Pioneers’ Memorial Hall.
The event was graced by Guest-of-Honor, former Minister of Foreign Affairs George Yeo, who officiated the ribbon-cutting ceremony alongside Mr. Lawrence Tan, Chairman of the Tan Kah Kee Foundation; Mr. Aw Chye Wee, Chairman of Ee Hoe Hean Club; Professor Phua (former chairman of the Tan Kah Kee Foundation), Mr. Chua Seng Chong (immediate past chairman of the Tan Kah Kee Foundation), Mr Hoon Tai Meng (vice-chairman of Ee Hoe Hean club), Mr Kwek Theng Swee (Vice-chairman of Ee Hoe Hean Club), witnessed by Mr Kho Choon Keng, President of Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry; Professor Wang Gungwu and other prominent leaders from the Chinese community.
Mr. Yeo was given a tour of the Tan Kah Kee Foundation’s Pioneers’ Memorial Hall, which reopened after several months of renovations and content renewal, offering visitors a fresh perspective and new experiences.
The event began with welcoming speeches from Mr. Aw Chye Hwee, Chairman of Ee Hoe Hean Club, and Mr. Lawrence Tan, Chairman of the Tan Kah Kee Foundation. In his speech, Mr. Lawrence Tan emphasized that the values and spirit of contribution embodied by Tan Kah Kee not only laid a foundation for the future but also inspired generations to follow in his footsteps. He also highlighted that the Tan Kah Kee Foundation’s Pioneers’ Memorial Hall, established in 2008, commemorates Chinese community leaders such as Tan Kah Kee, Tan Lark Sye, Lee Kong Chian, and many other pioneers, showcasing their significant contributions to society and enhancing our understanding of Singapore’s history.”
Mr. George Yeo reflected on Tan Kah Kee’s legacy, highlighting him as an outstanding entrepreneur deeply passionate about education, who used his wealth to support charitable and educational endeavors.
Mr. Lawrence Tan is heartened by the strong support from the Chinese community, as shown by their attendance. We would like to thank everyone who came to the event, making it even more meaningful and memorable.
The Pioneers’ Memorial Hall will be open daily throughout the month of October 2024, including weekends, from 10 AM to 5 PM. After October, it will return to normal office hours. The special exhibition by the Ee Hoe Hean Club will also be available throughout the month.
