“Research Vessel Tan Kah Kee Visits Singapore to Launch the Commemorative Events for the 150th Birth Anniversary of Tan Kah Kee”

Tan Kah Kee foundation was honoured to invite Mr Desmond Tan, Senior Minister of State, Prime Minister’s Office as our Guest-Of-Honour on this special occasion. In his speech, Mr Tan said:

“Mr. Tan Kah Kee has contributed to building over 118 schools, including Hwa Chong Institute, Tao Nan School, Chong Fu School, and many more. Tan Kah Kee emphasized that education is an important foundation for Singapore. He believed that education is the key factor in advancing technology and shaping the future of Singapore.”

“In honour of the 150th birthday anniversary of Tan Kah Kee, the Foundation has planned a series of activities to promote Tan Kah Kee’s spirit. The visit of the R/V TKK from Xiamen University to Singapore marks the start of this series of events”.

The highlight of the event was the ribbon-cutting ceremony, led by SMS Desmond Tan and the committee members of the Tan Kah Kee Foundation, officially launching the Foundation’s 150th-anniversary series of events. Following the ceremony, guests boarded the vessel for a guided tour. 

Also in attendance were H.E. Mr. Cao Zhongming, Ambassador of China to Singapore; Mr. Lin Dongwei, Executive Vice-Chairman of Xiamen University Council; descendants of Tan Kah Kee; as well as representatives from various Singaporean Chinese community organizations, including Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan, Ee Hoe Hean Club, Jimei University Alumni Association Singapore, Shanghai Maritime University Alumni Association Singapore, Dalian Maritime University Alumni Association Singapore , and other Chinese community groups.

We sincerely thank all the supporting partners, dedicated volunteers, and generous sponsors for their support.

The R/V TKK was opened to the public on July 27 and 28. The organisers hope to promote the Tan Kah Kee spirit while advancing Sino-Singaporean technological exchanges through marine science education. We received overwhelming response from the public during registration and appreciate the strong support from all sectors! The total turnout for the open days were approximately 1,100.
