“The Li Siong Tay Postgraduate Scholarship, offered by the Tan Kah Kee Foundation, is a crucial and rare source of financial support for students pursuing the arts and education fields in Singapore. The scholarship allowed me the peace of mind and the intellectual bandwidth to complete the final year of my PhD, requiring close attention and long stretches of research and writing time. My PhD emphasises collaboration, care ethics and the invisibility of critical labour in arts criticism in Southeast Asia, which felt aligned with the Foundation’s commitment to community building, and I deeply appreciated the Foundation’s support of unconventional fields and artistic knowledge production. Since completing my PhD, I have helped to co-develop the inaugural MFA Fine Art programme at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, was appointed director of the Asian Dramaturgs’ Network and became arts editor of the independent digital magazine Jom—in keeping with my multi-hyphenate and relational interests”
