In celebration of Singapore’s 60th year of independence, the Tan Kah Kee Foundatio.n hosted a meaningful public seminar on August 3, exploring the century-long evolution of local Chinese banks. The session focused on how these institutions navigated times of change with foresight and reform, ultimately becoming key pillars of Singapore’s and the region’s economic development.

Jointly supported by the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Ee Hoe Hean Club, Tan Kah Kee International Society and the Tan Ean Kiam Foundation, the event was held at SCCCI’s auditorium and saw an enthusiastic turnout.

Speaking at the opening of the seminar, Mr Lawrence Tan, Chairman of the Tan Kah Kee Foundation shared “The 1933 merger of the 3 banks was not only a milestone in Singapore’s financial history, but also a testament to the Chinese community’s unity and resilience in times of crisis. OCBC’s cross-border achievements today are a continuation and elevation of that spirit — an important chapter in the Singapore Story worth remembering.”

We extend our deepest appreciation to our speakers, Dr Yang Yan (Department of Chinese Studies, NUS & Wan Boo Sow Research Centre for Chinese Culture) and Mr Xie Dongming (Head of Asia Macroeconomics, OCBC Bank) for their insightful presentation, and to Dr Tan Teng Phee (Chief Researcher at the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry) for chairing the interaction session.

Thank you to all representatives, guests, and attendees who contributed to the meaningful conversations. We look forward to seeing you at the next one!
